Nurse Educator Average Age: 57

"It's estimated that the actual nursing faculty shortage will end up being greater than the nursing shortage."

Over the next two to three years Michigan is preparing to handle the fact that seventy percent of all the nursing faculty at NMU will be eligible for retirement. In times where the nurses are in such high demand, losing the experienced people that train them is upsetting.

NMU is looking to the federal government for assistance while working on creative solutions internally to build out nursing gradauate programs for students interested in advancing their nursing degrees.

For nurses that are interested in becoming nurse educators, the timing couldn't be better. Qualified instructors are in huge demand and getting a master's degree in nursing for education is becoming more convenient for working nurses through nursing degree online programs.

At NMU, Nursing Education Associate Dean Dr. Kerri Schuiling, Ph.D. is optimistic about the future of their nursing program:

"Here at Northern, our grad program fortunately is full and probably about two-thirds of our present class is very interested in becoming nurse educators."
