The American Academy of Nursing Presents its 2006 Media Award

Let's face it the United States is experiencing a critical nursing shortage. According to the US Department of Heath & Human Services there will be over 800,000 unfilled nursing positions by the year 2020. A significant contributor to the nursing shortage is the lack of nurse educators available to teach qualified nursing candidates. Many students have to wait two and three years to gain acceptance to a nursing program. And many other potential students are not even considering nursing as a viable career choice.

To spark interest and gain exposure of nursing as a profession - Access Nurse, a national travel nurse company, created a web-based docu-drama that highlighted nursing as a rewarding career choice to encourage more people to enter the profession. The show released on nursetv.com, shined the spotlight on these unsung heroes of medicine. For 13 weeks the show focused on six travel nurses from all over the country on assignment in Southern California, experiencing the intense hospital environment and the excitement of exploring and living in a new place.

In the process Access Nurse created a highly creative and effective way to recruit traveling nurses into hospitals and was honored by The American Academy of Nursing with the 2006 Media Award. "The review committee liked the portrayal of nurses on the show as skilled and caring professionals in a variety of clinical settings, as well as real people who enjoy the company of each other during rest, relaxation and recreation."
