Philippine Nurses Want U.S. Nursing Jobs

The national nursing shortage is opening the door and providing much opportunity for Philippine nurses looking for working visas in the United States. Nurses throughout the Philippines are coming to the U.S. and filling the plethora of available nursing positions in an attempt to permanently reside in America. Worldwide demand for Filipino nurses is so high that it's starting to deplete the country's hospitals, banks, and courtrooms as professionals go back to school to become nurses and emigrate.

In Texas there are 28,000 job openings for nurses in the state. Texas colleges and universities are graduating just 6,000 nurses per year. By 2010, the federal government estimates, Texas will have a whopping shortfall of 42,000 nurses. The national shortage is expected to be 10 times as large. Part of the nursing shortage problem is American women and men can't get into nursing schools because there aren't enough teachers and classrooms. However, one solution, that's becoming more popular in the academic arena, to combat the lack of available classrooms is utilizing a virtual environment. More and more nursing are seeking out and getting a nursing degree online from accredited nursing schools throughout the country. These programs are designed to provide nurses with a unique blend of advanced nursing and business management skills that are needed in order to better manage today's health care duties.

For decades, the Philippines has educated far more nurses than its labor market can absorb. Many recent graduates work in hospitals as unpaid volunteers; a few even pay the hospitals for a chance to get work experience. After a year or two on the job, however, nurses tend to join the exodus. A quarter-million Philippine nurses - 85 percent of nursing school graduates - work overseas. The best often come to the U.S., where between 50,000 and 75,000 Filipinos work as nurses.
