Why Do Nurses Quit During the First Year?

It's a good question with no real cut and dry answer. The most generically cited answer of "I don't know" or "It wasn't for me" doesn't provide much insight. Other reasons include poor working conditions, significant responsibilities, lengthy learning curve (1-2 years on the floor), and an unsupportive environment. However, I believe the real answer is lack of drive. I mean if you really enjoy helping people and like sticking people with needles then I believe that nursing is one of the most rewarding careers available.

As with all careers, nothing is perfect. You will have your good and bad days, your ups and downs. The key ingredient is having a passion for what you do and staying the course. If you feel that nursing could be what you want to do, then the first step is to begin exploring your options. A good starting point is finding out more about the educational path by requesting nursing program literature.
