Which Qualifications Does a Nurse Need?

NursesWhen you used to ask young girls and boys what they wanted to be when they grew up, the boys would often say they wanted to be a doctor and the girls would say they wanted to be a nurse.  It was thought that these were the roles that men and women were supposed to take.  Fortunately, time has changed these stereotypes.  Male nurses and female doctors are common and being a woman is no longer considered to be a quality that was required to becoming a nurse.  That might make many more people wonder what qualifications does a nurse need to start practicing.

The answer to that question depends on what kind of nurse that you want to become.  There are many different levels that can be achieved in nursing.  The nurses that have the most training are capable of doing many of the same things that doctors can.  There are also many entry level nursing positions that do not require as much training.  The one thing that all nurses have is that they have gone to some type of school to get the training they need to perform their duties.

There are many schools that offer nursing programs.  The programs can be as short as 6 months and will allow you to work as a nurse’s aide.  There are also 2 year and 4 year programs that allow you to do more nursing duties.  Many of the nursing positions that you might aspire to will not only require that you complete an educational program from an accredited schools, but you will also have to pass a certification test and be licensed in the state that you want to work in.  Most schools that offer the nursing programs will help their students with the tests and the certification process that they need to work as a nurse.

Some nurses continue their education to allow them to work in specialty areas.  One of the highest levels of nursing is the licensed practical nurse.  These nurses have completed additional educational requirements and training and are able to perform many of the same duties that doctors can such as writing prescriptions.  This requires a nurse to go back to school to get the education they need.

Education is one of the most important qualifications that a nurse needs, but it is not the only one.  Nurses must also be compassionate, organized and willing to work with people.  Nurses are very special people that are vital in the healthcare of others.  Because of the importance of nurses, the amount they are paid for their work has risen.  It is a rewarding career both emotionally and financially.  If it is something that interest you, it might be time to start looking into what qualifications does a nurse need and to take the steps that will start you in the right direction.
